Name of Organization - National Gallery of ArtWashington, D.C.Closes - November 1st (may be extended)Title - Art DirectorType - Full-TimeApply - Apply to both position listings, if eligible.The primary purpose of the work in the Art Director position is to lead the visual identity that defines the brand. Reporting to the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher in the Office of Brand Strategy and Publishing within the division of Exhibitions, Programs, and Audience Engagement, the Art Director provides supervision to subordinate staff and oversees and executes visual design concept development and project management.DutiesAs the Visual Information Specialist, you will:

  • In collaboration with the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher, evaluate brand visibility and ensure high quality and effectiveness of all brand creative projects. Supervise, direct, and take ownership of design concept development and idea execution; pursue idea extensions and lead working collaborations as part of the creative team. Develop working partnerships across the museum. Maintain mastery knowledge of branding and ensure its consistency across channels and products. Have experience launching a brand and its extensions, developing and maintaining brand guidelines, creating templates and toolkits, and auditing for brand maintenance. Proactively pursue solutions beyond the immediate scope of work and find ways to tighten and/or grow the brand visually.
  • Maintain mastery knowledge of design theory and innovative audience engagement and brand strategies for all channels; support the Chief Brand Officer and Publisher in developing and executing projects to achieve goals. Maintain mastery knowledge of signage design and material, production, and installation methods. Maintain mastery knowledge of fine art book design, including experience with concept development, materials, production, color proofing for artwork, and printing methods.
  • Directly supervise one or more Visual Information Specialists, performing the full range of supervisory responsibilities. Provide technical and administrative supervision; maintain an organizational environment and processes that positively influence employee opportunity to deliver high quality products and services. Establish guidelines for the accomplishment of work and individual performance expectations for staff members in accordance with institution-wide policies and procedures for supervisors.
